- Self-managed websites

Need a Self-Managed Website?

In case you missed it on a previous page, a self-managed web site is, once set up, one that you yourself will manage, edit, add or remove content, and so on…

Examples of this self-managed websites are:

  • this website which we manage ourselves,
  • www.mental-workout.com (one of our websites where we add new articles and new mental exercises once in a while),
  •  www.listen2articles.com (also one of our websites where we also add new articles once in a while), and
  • www.seo-analysis.com (also one of our websites which we manage ourselves),
  • www.cuttingitfine.com.au which we have set up for my brother who is now managing it himself ie. adding his own content, editing the theme to his liking, adding his own photos and so on…

Self-Managed Websites Used For…

Self-managed websites are versatile in that they can be used in many ways:

tick information sites used to share information, promote a business or a service. This is what this site is about, as is www.listen2articles.com and www.cuttingitfine.com.au,

tick membership sites where only registered members are able to access certain information or certain digital products. Members are also optionally able to add their own content to such sites and to make comments on content posted. An example of a membership site is www.mental-workout.com, as is www.cuttingitfine.com.au where the membership feature is used so staff can login to check their weekly staff roster,

tick ecommerce sites used to sell digital or physical goods online.

Pros of a Self-Managed Website

There are many advantages to having a self-managed website but please be aware that it is not for everybody. Pros of this type of site are:

tick managing the site: you can easily edit the existing content yourself, add new content, add or replace existing pictures or photos, add new pages with fresh content, and so on…  The website menu will automatically update itself when you add new pages to your site which makes the process trouble free,

tick changing themes: you can easily change the look of your website just adding a new theme from the administrator’s panel and activating it. There are thousands of free themes available, as well as professionally created ones that will require a payment. To help you, we will install a customisable theme which normally costs around A$80. This theme, although a bit tricky to use, will enable you to make your web site look the way you want it to,

tick added functionality: you will be able to add functionality to your site by installing so-called plug-ins. There are thousands of available plug-ins, most of them free but some requiring a payment.

tick time saver: self-managed websites are a huge time saver as, once set up, you can focus simply on the content of your website: text, images, … There is absolutely no need for you to worry about HTML or CSS code, Javascript or PHP code, and so on… You can of course delve into these things if you want to. The option is there if you want it.

Cons of a Self-Managed Website

Self-managed websites do have negatives you need to be aware of. The ones we could think of are:

cross themes I: there may not be a theme you like available for free or for a fee. This means that you may have to settle for a theme that is not really what you want, or having to employ someone to develop a specific theme for you,

cross themes II: while changing a theme will be easy to do, you must warned that doing so may require, for example, your banner to be edited or redesigned as the size and/or colour of the new theme may not match those of the banner of your current theme,

cross theme tweaking: if you happen to like a particular theme but would like to change a couple of things, you will need to delve into the CSS of the theme to make the changes,

cross steep learning curve: depending on your current level of skills, there could be a lot to learn in a short period of time to become proficient enough to be able to work with the administrator side of your web site. To help you with that, we will make available to you, as one of our customers, a series of 30 videos on how to work with the administrator side of your self-managed website,

search engine optimisation: you will need to do the search engine optimisation (SEO) of your website yourself if you want to rank well with search engines such as Google. To help you with that, we will install a SEO plug-in that will help you make the process as easy as possible. Again, depending on your current level of skill, there could be a learning curve in understanding the information the plug-in displays for you,

cross plug-ins: you will rely on 3rd party plug-ins to expand the functionality of your web site. This means that you will rely on the hope that the plug-ins will work without fault, that the developers will fix promptly any bugs you find and report, and so on …

cross third-party scripts: you may have difficulty incorporating third party scripts you like (written in Javascript, PHP, ASP, and so on…) into your self-managed website as you will be tied down to the self-managing website script used to manage your web site.
